July 7, 2017 – Indecent Exposure.

“Look,” he said as he cornered me on the train and pulled out his dick mere feet from my face. This type of public display shows power. It shows his power as a man. It shows my lack of power as a woman. What I felt was anger. Disbelief. Helplessness. But most of all fear.  I wasn’t wearing anything provocative. I didn’t say anything to provoke him. So, why? What makes any man feel like that is okay?

Society tells me to carry around pepper spray to protect myself in situations like these. But why should I have to? Why can’t I feel assured in my ability to take control of the situation? Why is it almost always the man in these situations who holds the power, yet it’s the woman who is expected to guard herself against the misuse of this power?

The man on the train’s penis will forever be engrained in my mind. There is power in a penis. The way it grows and pokes and prods and pierces. In that moment I was not human. Just some thing to be used. An object there for someone else’s pleasure and amusement.

You talk about rape too much.

They tell me I talk about rape too much but…

I will never forget what happened that night.

My body won’t let me.

My mind won’t let me.

If I’m not allowed to forget then you aren’t either.

I will scream about it at the top of my lungs.

I will write about it til the day I die.

I was not the first and I know I won’t be the last.

So hear my story.

Soak it in.

Let it consume you as it has consumed me.

Never forget that next time it could be you.
